6 steps to success in studying vocabulary

Tired of trying to learn new vocabulary? Do not give up! Here is the list of six tips that will make studying new words a breeze:

  1. Plan yourself! Decide, how many words daily you want to learn. Set a reasonable number of words. Can you only spend 15 minutes each day studying new vocabulary? That’s fine, but do not plan to learn 100 words in a day in those 15 minutes.
  2. Organise learnt words in a pad or using one of many online applications so that you can smoothly go back to them when you want to revise new material.
  3. Revise your new words! Every day take 5-10 minutes to revise words that you have studied the day before. At the end of each week review all of the new words that you have learnt in that week. At the end of the month revise all the words from that month.
  4. When studying new words, do not limit yourself to repeating words over and over again. Form your own sentences for each of the new words. Keep a record of these sentences. The crazier and more ridiculous the phrase is the better results. It is because of unusual things “stick” in our memory for longer.
  5. Find a friend or a family member to study together. Check on each other’s progress weekly. This will motivate you both, and it is also an excellent opportunity to spend some quality time together.
  6. Remember to give yourself a reward! For example, if you have got 90 % of new words correct from your monthly list, treat yourself to something nice. You deserved this!
